The Indexing and Validation Layers of Rainbow Protocol are crucial components ensuring the correctness and integrity of transactions and contracts.
Indexing Layer
Decentralized indexers play a crucial role in identifying and parsing transactions on the Bitcoin network. Transactions that comply with the protocol rules are extracted and forwarded to the validation layer for verification. Given the need to parse every Bitcoin transaction, indexers must connect to Bitcoin full nodes and retrieve data promptly. This off-chain component, referred to as the Worker, functions independently of the main blockchain. Similar to other overlay protocols, users can run their own indexers. However, indexers face two significant challenges:
Consistency and Accuracy: All indexer software must operate correctly and provide accurate data. Any incorrect data can lead to erroneous asset balances and rule violations. Consequently, the index versions of most overlay protocols must remain consistent to prevent "forks" and divergences.
Incentivization: Most overlay protocol index nodes lack effective incentives. Indexing is essentially a service provided to users, requiring efficient operation in a server environment. For the average user, the costs of running and maintaining these index nodes are high. As a result, most overlay protocol index nodes are managed by large service providers, exacerbating network centralization.
Rainbow Protocol aims to enable index nodes to run in a distributed manner and receive appropriate incentives. This approach ensures the quality of indexing operations and encourages active user participation.
Validation Layer
The validation layer comprises a network of multiple Bitcoin light nodes and smart contracts. Its purpose is to validate Bitcoin transactions and Rainbow operation scripts, ensuring their integrity and correctness. Unlike the indexing layer, the validation layer collaborates with smart contracts, participating in data and identity authentication. This collaboration allows it to theoretically partake in incentive distribution.
Rainbow Protocol intends to enhance both the indexing and validation layers. By ensuring that individuals and organizations participating in these processes receive effective incentives, Rainbow Protocol promotes decentralized development and robust participation.
Incentive Mechanism
